Katherine, situated on the Katherine River, is a major centre for the northern cattle stations. The first Homestead in the area, Springvale, was built in 1879, and its pastures were stocked by cattle, horses and sheep overlanded from Adelaide in an epic ten month trek. The railway arrived at Emungalan on the northern bank of the Katherine River in 1917, and at Katherine proper in 1926, but the town's growth was slow until the war.
