In the mid-nineteenth century the town was known as Langs Crossing and Cobb & Co maintained a staging-post there until the coming of the railway in 1882. Construction of the Hay Waterworks began in 1877 and the town pioneered irrigation in the Riverina, as well as being the first rural NSW centre to have reticulated water supply and mains sewerage.
