Known as the Gateway to the real Outback and situated on the Darling River, Bourke is the centre of a large wool and cotton growing area. Fort Bourke, the original stockade, was erected and named by Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1835 on his expedition down the Darling. The fort was set up as a defence against Aboriginal attack but was never needed. It is 11km south of the present town which was surveyed in 1862.
