Positioned in the centre of Port Stephens at the popular Nelson Bay is Zest Restaurant. The setting at Zest is enticingly intimate with cosy wooden tables and a relaxed seating; its smart casual setting is informal though distinguished. A decidedly modern European menu gives diners an array of options. The very name Zest stimulates the tastebuds with promise of decadent culinary delights from fresh produce perfectly prepared - their name is underscored with vast credentials. You can find this elegant restaurant nestled in the centre of the main dining enclave at Nelson Bay, if you haven’t already sought it out based on industry acclaim.

Zest boasts an impeccable reputation evidenced by its prestigious Chef Hats Award. Attributing to Zest's continuing high standards, they have retained accolades across three successive seasons in the meantime garnering other industry awards.

To maintain the restaurant's commitment to quality, head chef and owner Glenn Thompson begins preparations for the evening early in the day. He's on hand to take a special delivery, for example, of Margaret River truffles and supervise venison being readied for an entrée plate. A sous chef meticulously grinds fragrant parmesan while Thompson sets to expertly tie off sections of Flinders Island suckling lamb. These will be slowly pot roasted with capers, anchovies, lemon, white wine and stock until they reach melting tenderness just in time for dinner.

Zest has become a regional institution over the past nine years and Thompson believes the Good Food Guide's imprimatur has helped put Nelson Bay as a whole on the map as a dining destination. His cellar of premium labels from Australia, New Zealand, France and Italy is painstakingly researched and acquired, and much sought-after by knowledgeable wine aficionados.

Otherwise, the Zest emphasis is on sourcing ingredients from the region: "We like to support our local producers whenever possible," Thompson insists, "for instance, Port Stephens' Sydney Rock Oysters are absolutely second to none!"

Walking through the main street of Nelson Bay, I wasn't expecting to come across a one-hatted restaurant. Getting a table for four on a Saturday night was incredibly easy & so began the adventure. Entrees & mains were both fantastic and just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we were proven wrong by dessert which was simply exceptional. ...On the side of an amazing chocolate dish came something that I will remember & talk of for months to come...Popcorn ice-cream!!! Never had this before & dying to go back for more. The food was great, service was friendly if somewhat unattentive (didn't change wine glasses over, had to pour our own etc). Loved the fact that we could BYO - never had this option before in a hatted restaurant. Overall, excellent experience
