The Old George & Dragon Restaurant Overview

Built in 1837, The Old George & Dragon Restaurant in Maitland is esteemed as one of the Hunter Valley’s finest dining experiences. In its three decades as a fine dining restaurant it’s had just two owners and two chefs, but earned scores of awards. Beautiful antique paintings and furnishings, green felt walls and marble fireplaces exude an old-fashioned elegance perfectly complemented by the richly flavoured French-European menu & 200-strong wine selection. The best available produce decides the daily menu, which might include carpaccio of raspberry marinated venison served with white asparagus, mustard dressing, parmesan & a perfectly poached egg, or Queensland barramundi grilled in cinnamon butter & finished with a strawberry red wine jus.

Local iconic East Maitland restaurant The Old George and Dragon Restaurant has been named the "Best European Restaurant in Regional NSW" and is now set to attend the Restaurant and Catering National Awards on Monday 24th October, to contest the national title. This is the second year running that The Old George and Dragon has been named Best European Restaurant at NSW state level and owner Jennifer Nichols paid tribute to her wonderful team, headed up by Head Chef Gavin Forman. "Gavin's passion for food is unsurpassed. His attention to detail is evident right from when he develops his menu, through to the sourcing of the best local produce where possible, the final execution of the dish and its presentation on the plate. Consistency is the key to any successful business venture and The Old George has consistently been awarded for its achievements over its 29 year history. "


"One step inside our beautiful old building, which was originally built in 1837 and granted the 4th liquor license in NSW, and you are instantly transported back to a time when "going out for dinner" was a luxury. With its old-world charm and a warm intimate atmosphere, attentive staff and an ambience unmatched by any other venue in the valley, our guests are immediately made to feel like part of our family", Jennifer says. "But although the restaurant oozes luxury, we offer a very affordable evening out and these days our prices aren't much more than what you would pay at most local restaurants. Our menu prices are all inclusive. No paying for extras like bread and side dishes".


"It's interesting that even though the restaurant has been here for almost 30 years, we still have guests coming in and saying that they didn't know we here. Every single person that dines with us is just so complimentary. I think they are genuinely surprised when they find out that one of the State's best dining experiences is in their own back yard and certainly not as expensive as many others in Sydney and even in the vineyards."
