Inverell, on the MacIntyre River, is the centre of a rich farming and mineral working district with sapphire fossicking areas in the surrounding district. The name Inverell, chosen by Alexander Campbell in 1835, is Gaelic for 'meeting place of the swans'. Campbells homestead site was at the junction of the MacIntyre and Swanbrook Rivers where there was a large colony of swans.
