Gunnedah, at the junction of the Namoi and Mooki Rivers is the centre for the Liverpool Plains which produce wheat, wool, fodder crops, fat stock, coal and timber. The Plains were explored by John Oxley in 1818 and opened up by the discovery of Pandoras Pass through the Liverpool Range in 1823. The name Gunnedah derives from an Aboriginal word meaning 'white stones'.
