With its abundance of rainforests, coral reefs, beaches & volcanic peaks, this World Heritage-listed island is truly unique. Only 11 kilometres long, Lord Howe Island is packed with diverse plant and marine life. The island has a limit on visitor numbers so you'll never compete for space. Because of its location, the island enjoys a temperate all-year climate and draws nature-lovers & adventure-seekers alike. Apart from pristine beaches, lagoons and hidden coves, the island offers wonderful bushwalking opportunities. It also makes an ideal romantic getaway. Scuba diving & snorkeling are popular activities - the island boasts the world's southern-most coral reef. You'll find crystal clear water, over 500 species of fish and 90 coral species. Whales & dolphins appear offshore in season. Deep-sea fishing, tennis, cycling or just drinking in the tranquility are other favorite pursuits on the island. You can travel to Lord Howe independently, or buy one of a range of inclusive packages.

When to Visit Lord Howe Island

Tourism is the major industry and source of income on Lord Howe Island with the peak season from mid December to March. The climate is subtropical with mild to warm summers and cool to mild winters. There is a gradual transition from summer to winter conditions and vice versa. Temperatures range from about 28°C in summer with lows of about 13° in winter. The months of July, August and September can sometimes be windy.

Getting Around Lord Howe Island

Qantaslink operate 32-seat Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft to Lord Howe Island. Flight time is less than 2 hours from Sydney or Brisbane, (a seasonal service also operates from Port Macquarie). A strict 14kg luggage limit per person applies on all Lord Howe Island flights. The island has only one road and relatively few cars. There are no streetlights so if you want to venture out at night you’ll need to bring a torch with you, or buy one from the Shop. There’s no regular bus service, but lodge hosts and restaurants will often pick up and drop off customers. Otherwise, Wilson’s can do pick-ups and drop-offs. The most common ways to get around are by bicycle,(there are plenty of places to rent bikes), boat or just plain walking.
