About Parkes
Parkes is in the Central NSW Region located in the state of New South Wales. The post code for Parkes is 2870.
Parkes is the commercial centre of a rich wool and wheat district, and also an industrial iron and steel town in its own right. First settled during the gold rush of the 1860's, the town was originally known as 'Bushman's' and was renamed after a visit by the Australian statesman and reformer, Sir Henry Parkes, in 1871. Today Parkes is probably best known for the giant CSIRO radio telescope at Alectown 24km to the north (3km off the Newell Hwy).
