The largest town on the Lachlan River, Forbes is a direct road-link between Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. First settled shortly after John Oxley explored the region in 1817, Forbes was the centre of a goldrush in 1861 and attracted the attention of bushrangers. Ben Hall was shot dead by police near the town in 1865, and his grave can still be seen in the local cemetery.
