About Bathurst

Bathurst lies 200 kms west of Sydney in Central Western New South Wales on the Macquarie River. Settlers arrived in 1815, only three years after Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson first crossed the Blue Mountains, making it Australia's oldest inland settlement. Part of one building in the city (1 George Street) dates back to 1817. The rich surrounding pastoral and agricultural land was responsible for Bathurst's early growth, but progress was slow until the discovery of gold in the area in 1851. The rush brought thousands of prospectors who later settled down to become farmers. Today Bathurst has a wide range of secondary industry to maintain its prosperity, and the city gives an elegant and well-planned impression with its blue granite architecture and carefully tended parks and gardens.
