Situated on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, Young prospers today on its extensive cultivation of stone-fruit, especially cherries. Originally known as Lambing Flat, in the goldrush of 1860 the town's population swelled to 20,000 and its name was changed in honour of the then NSW Governor, Sir John Young. Cherry trees produce more than one million kilograms of fruit every year and an annual Cherry Festival is celebrated in November.
