Situated in a green valley near Canberra, Yass is the centre of an important wool-growing and agricultural district. Explored by Hume and Hovell in 1824, the town was gazetted in 1837. Over the years Yass has acquired a number of fine public buildings, chief of which is the handsome Court House (1879). 'Yass' is an Aboriginal word meaning 'running water'.
