About Australian Capital Territory

Australia's Capital Territory (ACT) established in 1911 to create a capital for the newly federated country of Australia, Surrounded by New South Wales, 281km from Sydney and 660km from Melbourne.

Canberra, (Australia's Federal Capital), is recognised as one of the worlds most successful examples of a planned city, with its architecture and design which complement the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. Canberra will always be a political city, but it has become much more with stylish restaurants, bars, boutique shopping and a calendar of events and festivals. Lake Burley Griffin, which fills the gap between the north and south of the city provides Canberra with a giant playground. Yachts and sailboards harness the breeze while families picnic along the shore. Cycle tracks surround the lake and extend into all the suburbs providing a scenic alternative transport network. Canberra boasts many beautiful buildings, famous monuments and national treasures. It is the home of the Australian National Gallery, High Court, National Library and the New Parliament House. The most popular tourist attraction however is still the Australian War Memorial. Its immense collection of aircraft, military hardware, relics and displays are seen by more than a million visitors each year.

Surrounding rural areas and stretches of natural bushland are home to charming townships such as Tharwa and Hall, award-winning wineries, and nature parks. Today 53% of the ACT remains a nature park or reserve.

Just 45 minutes drive from the city is Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Enjoy Australian animals in their natural habitat, delightful wildflowers during spring and rich Indigenous and pioneer heritage. Namadgi National Park, again just 45 minutes' drive from the city at the northern end of the Australian Alps, has numerous marked trails where spectacular wildflowers bloom in spring. The Indigenous rock art and Aboriginal shelters are easily accessible. Camping is possible while fishing and horse riding is permitted in designated areas.
