Autumn Escapes

Get Out of Town this Easter

Amidst the cooler autumn months, we can’t help but anticipate the onset of winter and the snow season – but we’re not quite there yet.  Nevertheless, with Easter right around the corner (if bookings aren’t already made) our minds are swimming with ideas for an ultimate autumn escape.  Now is an opportune time to think strategically and warm up for the ski and snowboard season via alternative sports in the same areas you’ll be seeking out snowfields a few months from now.

While we’ll soon be downhill skiing and boarding in the popular peaks of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, it’s the state of Victoria that really stands out in their marketing of exclusive cross country ski terrain.  For the outdoor enthusiast, XC trails in the off-season translates to gentle (though still sometimes tough) area that’s clearly defined for a scenic bush walk or even a guided hiking tour.  Another possibility amongst devotees is cycling these hilly areas, though it is not always ideal for beginners.

Familiarize yourself with escape destinations in our Victoria Accommodation, Restaurants & Travel Directory.  When travelling east of Melbourne, you’ll find areas that are so close to the city, yet so different.

Peaks and Valleys of Gippsland - Mount St Gwinear

In the winter, just over two hours east of Melbourne, you’ll discover Mt St Gwinear in Gippsland, a natural area where families ride toboggans, build snowmen, and enjoy 20 kms of XC trails.  Often referred to as “the Natural Mountain”, it’s located in the north-east of Baw Baw National Park.  This time of year the mountain provides ample atmosphere for a good ol’ bush walk and whilst sussing out the scenic routes of Gippsland country in autumn, you’ll be pleased to discover it has much to offer as a wine and dine destination.

You’ll find a plethora of travel highlights in our Gippsland Guide, including award winning restaurants in Traralgon and Warragul, south of Mt St Gwinear.

Yarra Walks Display Regrowth and Offer Rejuvenation - Lake Mountain Alpine Resort

Outdoor travellers know Lake Mountain as one of Melbourne’s closest and most affordable alpine retreats, functioning as a rocky playground all year round.  Aim for the quaint township of Marysville then enjoy the 30 minute drive to the top of the mountain where 30km of walking trails await you amongst the plateau and summit.  Small groups may be able to organise guided walks through Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, and mountain biking as well as road cycling options are also out there.  Because of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, you’ll find the mountain vegetation in its re-growth phase.

Our Yarra Valley Guide includes picturesque pit stop suggestions amongst the various valley routes to and from Lake Mountain.

A Range of Options in the Yarra - Mount Donna Buang

When in the heart of the Yarra Valley, you may want wish to approach a new ascent on the slopes of Mt Donna Buang, sitting in the Yarra Ranges National Park.  Here you’ll find a popular raised Skywalk and well documented road cyclist climb from Warburton to the summit.

Destination Victoria High Country - Mount Stirling & Mount Buffalo

Your autumn escape is the perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with future snowy terrain, getting to know the Victorian Alps area in advance.  Downhill skiers and boarders are well aware of Victoria High Country because it brings us some of the best snowfields Australia has to offer, including Falls Creek, Buller and Hotham.  But Victoria also boasts cross country skiing resorts that minus the adrenaline factor may be lesser known.  Mt Stirling is one such mountain, offering crisp fresh air in the autumn on an extensive trail system sans snow.  You can escape dusty and dry valley heat here and even participate in specialized orienteering or team building programs.

Extreme adventure also awaits you at Mount Buffalo, one of the oldest national parks in Australia, where there are sheer cliffs for rock climbing, excellent mountain biking tracks and a road cycle challenge to the top of the mountain. For those who walk on the gentle side, Mount Buffalo serene bush walks on an autumn morning are will reveal some amazing rock formations.

Heading back down the mountain, our Victoria High Country Guide will give you many ideas that will top off your autumn escape along the way.

Want to plan an autumn escape that takes you statewide?  Our Victoria Accommodation, Restaurants & Travel Directory is here to assist.

L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival

08-15 March 2012

Outfits Good Enough to Eat

Okay, it may be a little bit nonsensical to directly equate food and fashion; however, just as an innovative twist on a classic fabric cut seems preposterous at first by conservative critics, they’ll invariably sway when a massive trend prevails from the modern statement.  Foodies have more than a cultivated palate; they have a dedicated eye for a well-plated dish, perseptive powers that may persuade them to try out a new look they witness throughout this week-long affair.

Visually oriented food loving socialites will be attending the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and will definitely bite and chew some of the season’s hottest looks. Festival attendance ensures that their next night out in Australia's cultural capital – probably in between March’s fashion events – could be in designs hot off the runway discovered firsthand. But fashion curiosity is non-exclusive and while some of the events may not be for everyone, there’s an open invitation for all to explore the festival.

Allow the AGFG to help with your planning.  View our Melbourne City Travel Guide.

Shoes That Match Your Main

L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival is designed to showcase diverse, exciting and often surprising experiences on and off the runway.  This week is designated for apparel and accessory designers to display their wares, for artisans to set the stage in Melbourne City, and collectors given full permission to be ostentatious.  If you’ve ever been tempted to match your evening attire with the main course you plan to eat at your favourite restaurant in the precincts, by all means…  Why not take it one step further and order your own personal degustation designed to match your ensemble tip-to-toe?

Closing the week-long show, Toni Maticevski will take his signature gown couture collection to the red carpet stage.  An evening affair, you may be tempted to don a suave do, haute couture attitude and vivacious apparel.  When you’re firing with emotion afterwards, it may be wise to reserve a table so that you can be sure your attire matches your main - giving a whole new meaning to meal planning.  (Most menus are available for preview online.)  On this final evening that will end an exhaustively explorative week opulence is expected.

Reserve a table at your favourite restaurant in the Melbourne City precinct.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

12 February – 04 March, 2012

The Rumours are True – LGBTQI Pride Festival

The word on the street is that Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2012 has confirmed a performance by pop heroine Kylie Minogue. Not only will she be an honoured guest at the Mardi Gras Parade, it’s been announced that she will be performing at the Mardigrasland afterparty to take place within Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter. This outrageous evening and night like no other unfolds on Saturday, 03 March.

Sydney Mardi Gras festival 2012 officially begins on Sunday, 12 February and there are plenty of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Queer & Intersex (LGBTQI) pride festivities leading up to the flamboyant and fun festivities on parade night.

"Being part of Mardi Gras this year is so important to me because I know that so many of my fans make up the amazing community it represents," said Kylie.

The Parade and Glamstand on Oxford and Flinders Street is one of Sydney’s unforgettable celebrations, an exotic rainbow display of floats, costumes, design and dance; the Glamstand is the best place to watch the world famous parade, offering a beautiful setting complete with fine foods and glamorous bars.

Let us help you plan your Mardi Gras trip with our Sydney Restaurant, Accommodation & Travel Guide

History of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Sydney’s Mardi Gras is unique to any other pride event hosted by other major cities worldwide - no other gay pride event has captured this level of imagination and participation.

"A visit to Mardi Gras is an absolute once-in-a-lifetime must for every gay travelling man," encourages the gay travel bible Spartacus. Indeed, many gay men and lesbian women fly across the world again and again to enjoy these all-inclusive queer oriented festivities.

Kicking Off this Year’s Festivities

Fair Day launches Sydneysiders and visitors into the estival, taking place from 10am until 8pm at Victoria Park Camperdown on Sunday, 12 February. It’s a fun and relaxed day out in the park with family, friends – old & new – and even pets, drawing in about 70, 000 people per year. There are a wide range of delicacies and drinks available at the stalls, while the Gaydar Lounge and Finlandia Lounge will provide cold drinks and great spaces for a chat.

Can’t get enough picknicking? The following Sunday, 26 February, Sydney Femme Guild Picnic will be held at Enmore Park.

Mardi Gras Harbourside & Hot Bars

There’s nothing quite like letting loose on a cruise, and on Tuesday, 28 February you can check out the stunning Sydney harbour on the Sunset Cruise filled with DJs, drinks, canapés and great company – departure is from Casino Wharf.

Following that, anticipation is building for The Laneway on Sunday, 04 March. The day after the parade and party, when the lane is the stage, gives you the chance to close down the festival in two of Sydney’s hippest pubs, The Flinders and The Beresford. The connecting Hill Street laneway in-between will also be lit up with guest DJs, giving you one last lick of Mardi Gras magic, old-school/new-school style.

Best of Brazil - Brazilian Carnival

The Unforgettable Carnaval of Brazil

On the lookout for another unforgettable annual festival?  Carnaval of Brazil is probably the most celebrated manifestation of freedom and happiness on the planet; it most definitely is in Brazil where Carnaval is a magnimous event of magnificent proportions.

Experience the cultural flavours of Brazil in Australia

The Brazilian Carnaval Showcases African-Brazilian Culture

Years ago, for almost an entire week, I was carried away with pulsating musical beats, beautiful samba dancers, electrifying capoeira performances, and nonstop Brazilian music in the hectic Rio de Janeiro streets.  There was fun, there was fantasy, there were feathers... and much, much more.

Held annually forty-six days before Easter, Carnaval is truly an event like no other, a time when Brazil stops completely for festivities of great intensity!  It peaks on the 6th day, Shrove Tuesday and comes to an official close by the following day, Ash Wednesday, symbolizing the first day of Lent.  To put things in perspective, this jovial period accounts for 80% of the country's annual beer consumption and over 70% of their annual tourism.

Carnaval is believed to have originated from the pagan festival of Saturnalia, before being adopted by Christianity. Roman Catholics and other Christians traditionally abstained from the consumption of meat and poultry, hence the term Carnaval, from "carnelevare" meaning "to remove meat".

The modern Brazilian Carnaval, an unforgettable experience I was privy to, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1641 when the city's bourgeoisie imported the Parisian practice of holding balls and masquerade parties. While early celebrations mimicked the traditional European form, the festival later absorbed elements derived from Native American and African cultures.

Carnaval is celebrated countrywide all over Brazil, and within Brazilian communities throughout the world, with varying rhythms, participation, and costumes. Though undoubtedly what captures the eyes of millions of viewers from around the globe are the dazzling and glittering costumes on display in Rio de Janeiro during their famous parades at the Sambodromo.

Each year thousands of international visitors flock to Rio to experience these sensational parades, the mesmerizing beats and of course Rio’s incredibly sexy, flamboyant and outlandishly costumed samba dancers.  I recommend Carnaval as a once in a lifetime cultural event for the international traveller, best experienced firsthand.

Brazil's Carnaval has become known as The Greatest Show on Earth, and Rio has unquestionably earned its nickname as "Cidade Maravilhosa" translation "the marvelous city".

Brazilian Food

Since the partying never stops during Carnaval, with so much energy spent Sambaing and Cha Chaing, singing and cheering you are bound to get hungry. Luckily Brazil has plenty of food to offer the discerning traveller and I had the pleasure of enjoying some of the country's delicious and amazingly diverse cuisine.

Feijoada, Vatapa, Moqueca, and Churrasco - Brazilian cuisine boasts a wonderful mix of Portuguese, African and Native American influences. Each region asserts its own style, greatly swayed by history, immigration, and indigenous tradition. Below are some of the most popular dishes in Brazil.

Discover rich and diverse new recipes on our website.

Fine Foods and Culinary Style From Brazil

Feijoada is the national dish, and is essentially a terrifically hearty meat stew. The dish is believed to have been created by African slaves using dried beans, kale and cassava, along with cuts of pork and air dried beef.

Vatapá is a deliciously spicy mixture of bread, shrimp, red pepper, ginger, finely ground peanuts, coconut milk, palm oil and onions, enormously popular in the north and north east of Brazil.

Muqueca is another traditional Brazilian dish frequently found in the north east. Brazilians have been making muquecas, literally translating as "stews", for at least 300 years.  Their native stews are cooked slowly without adding water and basically contain fish, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and additional ingredients.

Churrasco originated in the south of Brazil with the gauchos, or cowboys, who commonly grilled prized top sirloin called Picanha in such a way. Churrasco is the cooking style, which translates roughly as the Portuguese term for "barbecue".  Various kinds of meat, including beef, pork, lamb and chicken are slow roasted, rotisserie-style over charcoal on long skewers resulting in a smoky flavour.

Throughout Brazil you will find a style of restaurant service called Rodizio. Rodizio is a traditional method of continuous service provided to customers who pay a fixed price. In Rodizio style, Churrascaria Passadores, meat waiters, continually visit the table armed with various meats on a skewer and serving knives. Passadores visit the table time and time again, serving each customer as they please until individual diners indicate they've had enough; it is customary to provide individual diners with a coloured card, green on one side and red on the other, to communicate with the servers.

Brazilian Restaurants in Australia

If you don't have a trip to Brazil scheduled in the forseeable future, or if you want a cultural precursor, there are a number of Brazilian Restaurants throughout Australia specializing in Churrasco and Rodizio.  I encourage you to try Brazilian eateries known for their electrifying atmosphere and as an unique alternative to the Aussie steakhouse, one that meatlovers will surely love.

Naughty Weekends Away - Summer Edition

Summer 2012

Weekend Getaway for Two – A Supremely Sexy Gift Idea

Sometimes we need to go beyond chocolates, roses & wine by flattering our lover with a little bit of travel.  An amorous flight of fancy needn’t require airline travel or a five-star luxurious booking, though it couldn’t hurt – as with food & dining, look local for sustainable options.

A naughty weekend is just what the love doctor ordered come February, when a couple days is all you need to tame that sexy beast within. And you don’t have to completely empty your pockets to romance the pants off your sweetheart.

The majority of accommodations out there are well aware that fun loving couples are quick to partake in the occasional weekend romp, snapping up welcoming romantic weekend packages for two like sexpot love dragons.

Ignite the Fire in Your Truelove with Travel & Accommodation

Commit to making this a love month with naughty weekend plans and bookings. With that starry-eyed conviction, you may be wondering where others are going, either to avoid the rush of other romantics or to beat them to the punch, being a closet competitive lust Spartan on a quest.

Popular accommodation booking site Wotif.com completes an annual poll announcing top Australian destinations at the end of each year, based on more than 250, 000 bookings per month. For 2011, Queensland was the top destination state overall, despite floods & cyclones.

But for our purposes here, The Wotif Top 20 city poll for Australian destinations in 2011 is more relevant, covering a wider range of holiday highlights across the country.  It’s no surprise that Sydney placed at #1, followed by Melbourne, as you would expect, leaving the Gold Coast to rank #3.

Adelaide’s designated at #5 this year, though is higher in ours at the moment because summer in this South Australian city is full of festivities.  Arts-oriented juggernaut travellers will want to take on this terrain with their ravishing sweetie.

Cheeky Options for Fun Loving Couples

If you’re a local, you know it, if you’re travelling to Adelaide, you won’t want to miss it.  Before you settle into your hotel, dine at Shiki and get a bit cheeky with your choice of entrées.  Remember, Japanese food is much more than just sushi. It’s theatrical and edible, serving sexy Japanese style cuisine in an authentic setting with elegant wood carvings and bamboo accentuations.   A cute kimono will not be on the menu; however, this is a recommended ingredient for theatrical fun.

Taking it to the bedroom, you need not stroll far to remove this sexy, short, dare we say “traditional” attire, as Shiki is part of the iconic InterContinental Adelaide.  They offer relaxing luxury weekend deals that can include breakfast for two and 4pm check out - Thur, Fri, or Sat check in required.

Summer Culture in Adelaide

Cellar Door Wine Festival, 24 February to 26 February

Adelaide Fringe Festival, 24 February to 18 March

Clipsal 500 Series Adelaide, 01 March to 04 March

Confessions of a Mardi Gras Virgin

If you’re into dress up, kinky kimonos are just the start.  Sydney ranked #1 on the Wotif destinations list where you’ll find public displays of bump, grind and bustle beyond your imagination at the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade on 03 March.

If you’re a self-confessed Mardi Gras virgin, you can partake in the parade as an onlooker or actively take a stance and dance.  Either way you choose to play, when gay abandon hits the streets there’s nothing that sings “sex is in the air” than outrageous, colourful, loud & proud fairies on the loose.  There are tonnes of places to stay in Sydney with erotic potentiality.

Since everyone has to an inner diva, by day or by night, let that inspirational idea stick with you when planning your Sydney getaway.  Drive an hour from Sydney and you’ll see a dynamically different destination at the comparably sedate Australis Retreat at Wisemans on the Hawkesbury River.

If you secure a timely summer booking to seduce that someone special, you may be one of the lucky couples to enjoy their Valentine Escape featuring 1 night accommodation in a River Room, with a bottle of bubbly & chocolates on arrival, a special 3 course Valentine’s dinner, and a continental breakfast for lovers in the morning.

Pre-Supine for the Artistically Inclined & Kinky Suds Fans

Melbourne is destination extraordinaire, especially for lovers with arts aficionado.  For pre-coital culture - often an amazing precursor to an orgasmic finale – check out Central Sky Lounge Apartment Hotel; their “Night at the La Boite Round House Theatre” package is an outing that promises to make you a laugh and loosen up.  Why not book during the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival?

Drive south to Mornington Peninsula, about an hour or so, and experience the ultimate sensation at Peninsula Hot Springs. Like stepping into another world, you and your partner will be beside yourselves amongst the steamy calm; resulting, of course, in a desirous ripple effect, as you’ll inevitably relax into that final release whilst tumultuously tumbling in those crisp linen boudoir sheets.  Did we mention they offer gift ideas – Valentines themed this time of year – such as Dine & Bathe or Indulgent Immersion packages?

Painless Travel for Erotic Pleasure

Dynamic relationships with an adventurous sexual element are always balancing the pleasure pain principle, but when it comes to travel there’s no question that you want it to be as painless as possible.  The Wotif ranking was #3 for the Gold Coast, followed by Brisbane at #4 and in both locations you’ll find the reliably deluxe Sofitel.

Splendid by day and spectacular by night, Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach is linked via monorail to Jupiters Casino (guaranteed to deliver pleasure or pain en masse) and running their “Fantastic February” promotions.  It includes their pleasing Valentine’s Day package, bringing you together in style so that you can get it on.

Where Sofitel Gold Coast is exciting and new, Sofitel Hotel Brisbane is bravura and classical, defined as one of the first international hotels to grace the city.  Take a peek at their Magnifique Romance options to spoil your love on Valentine’s Day.

Improve Intimacy with Rude Food & a Nude Interlude

There’s notably reason to trolup in Perth, noted as city #6 in Wotif’s poll.  Dine at award winning Origins in the city for refined French-inspired modern Australian cuisine, rooted in early romantic culinary history that will emit risqué vibes that lead to seduction and culmination. There’s something indescribably rude about gourmet French food, and it’s guaranteed to put you in the mood.

Situated in the five star Pan Pacific Perth Hotel, specialising in intimate delights, consider booking their “Be My Valentine” degustation then swirl your sweetheart back to an unforgettably tranquil room where you can finally succumb to your most basic senses.

Going Govermental with Madame in Power

Let Canberra’s civilized reputation compound into a cultural renaissance in your romantic life.  Tantalizing possibilities may include the elegantly situated Ginger Room by leading chef Janet Jeff.  With radical Asian influence and evocative vision, consider attending their Waterford Crystal Fine Dining Series event - the next one is occurring on 20th February – in association with Australian Gourmet Traveller & Gourmet Traveller WINE.

For further erotic enlightenment, consider staying at nearby Hyatt Hotel Canberra where they offer a Renaissance exhibition package in association with the National Gallery – go hard in your exploration of the past then go home to one of their Park Rooms where you can get present with those powerful passionate urges within.

Spice Up Your Love Life, Up North

Being the year of the dragon, there’s intensity in the air and a propensity towards risk.  When taking your darling out on a date, definitely dare to spice things up with new dishes.  In Darwin, #11 city in the poll, you’ll find Thai, Indian & Nonya cooking at award winning Hanuman

Upon dining here you’ll experience firsthand why it’s so popular; as such you’ll also find their restaurants in Alice Springs & Cairns (city #9). When in dining in Darwin at Hanuman, afterwards you’ll require a room to get down under the covers in true Oz style, and Holiday Inn Darwin is just the place, conveniently located in the same complex as this zesty restaurant.

Besotting Your Flaming Lips

Our purview of passionate opportunities for hanky panky within a weekend getaway ceases with Launceston and the Tamar Valley, Wotif ranked as city #14.  A heavenly affair can be cordially arranged at City Park Grand that bodes suites, a day spa & massage, and the unforgettable touch of Larceny’s Bar & Restaurant, a true taste sensation on lovers’ pleasure-seeking palate.

Their romantic getaway is designed for Tasmanian bound entanglements, offering a spa suite, champagne on arrival - cooling those flaming lips of lust - and 3 course dinner for 2 in Larceny’s restaurant.  Tie it in with the momentous Festivale Food & Wine Event to further uplift your spirits so that you can romp around in the sack, full of wine & rhythmic remnants from the wicked and wiley Oz music experience.
